The Contemporary Choice: A Square Wedding Cake That Wows

Updated: Feb 6

Round cylindrical shapes are still the most popular formats for wedding cakes, but how about a square wedding cake. These are becoming increasingly popular for couples and wedding planners who perhaps have a more modern, design-focused idea of how they want the wedding to feel, or for those just wanting a cake that is a little bit different from the norm and which will leave a lasting impression with guests.

Square wedding cakes are more technical and take longer to make, but they fit perfectly with a more contemporary vibe to the wedding, for example ones taking place in a more modern space city space or where the couple want to highlight the architectural features.

With my signature style of smooth sides and sharp edges, designing square cakes gives me the perfect opportunity to create beautifully sharp edges, which I personally find really satisfying, and helps give the cakes that extra 'wow!' factor. Get in touch if you would like to discuss more

Added Design Elements For Square Cakes

Square wedding cakes often don't need to have a lot of added decoration so that the sharp edges and clean lines aren't obscured and the precision can be appreciated.

With their more modern look, they can act as a perfect canvas for abstract palette knife strokes and colouring. Take a look at my wedding cake gallery for more inspiration

To create interesting angles and lines, parts of the cake can also be cut off and the outer surface built up again with buttercream or ganache to create a shaved or chiselled-off look.

Flowers are always a popular choice for wedding cakes, and you can read about the pros and cons for using real vs faux ones here . They look great on square wedding cakes creating the contrast between natural, flowing forms and the clean, sharp lines.
